Frequently Asked Questions

Basically, letterpress is an old form of printing where a raised surface is inked and then brought into contact with a sheet of paper. The ink is transferred from the printing plate to the sheet of paper when they come in contact as the press closes. The modern style of letterpress is to leave an impression in the paper, giving the finished product a texture that is unique to the process. See a short video of our letterpress printing process here.

It’s more costly because only one color can be printed at a time. Each color in a job requires its own printing plate, press setup, and press cleanup. Even so, our clients say the quality and the unique look and feel of our product is worth it.

  1. Request an Estimate for the most accurate job cost.
  2. Email your press-ready pdf files, job details, and reference any Estimate you’ve received.
  3. Your files will be verified that they meet the plate making requirements.
  4. An invoice for full payment will be emailed to you.
  5. Payment forms accepted include: Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Sorry, we do not use PayPal.
  6. Once your invoice is paid your job is put on the press schedule, materials are ordered, and the production-clock will begin.

Due to several fixed-costs associated with letterpress printing and foil stamping, we’ve found these to be the most cost effective minimum order quantities:

Letterpress Printing: 500 pieces per item.

Foil Stamping: 1,000 pieces per item.

Most letterpress printed jobs are packaged and ready to ship 2-3 weeks from the date of file submission and invoice payment. Most letterpress printed and foil stamped jobs are ready to ship 3-4 weeks after receiving your files and invoice payment. Please note that job size, complexity, and the specification of materials other than our house paper (Crane’s Lettra) could impact the standard turnaround time.

We’re not a Quick-Print type of shop, our final product requires more than the push of a few buttons. It requires the purchase and manufacture of physical printing plates, the labor of manually setting up the printing press and mixing the ink, specifically for each job. Then, each job is hand-fed one sheet at a time through the press; it’s all very labor intensive but it does create a unique product. A video of our process can be seen here.

Sorry, we do not offer a Rush service. We like to give each job the attention to detail that it deserves; when a job is rushed we feel that we can not give our prefered level of service.

Hand-stamp the scent instead of ordering dust covers, hang tags, or labels with the scent printed on them. This will reduce print-production material costs and additional labor costs. This will also ensure that you won’t have an inventory of packaging items for a scent that just isn’t selling.

The most reliable way for us to print the correct color is when you specify your colors in Pantone Solid Uncoated ink formulas. We use the Pantone Solid Uncoated swatchbook for all of our ink mixing formulas because all the papers we print on are uncoated. Please make sure you’re using the Pantone Solid Uncoated book when telling us what color to print.
